How is IBS treated?

There is no known cure for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), but the symptoms can sometimes be managed by tweaking your diet and lifestyle.

It may help improve the frequency and severity of IBS Symptoms to:

  • identify and avoid foods or drinks that trigger your symptoms
  • alter the amount of fibre in your diet
  • exercise regularly
  • reduce your stress levels

Medication is sometimes prescribed by medical professionals such as your GP for people with IBS to treat the individual symptoms they experience.

Changing your diet will play an important part in controlling your symptoms of IBS. However, there is no “one size fits all” diet for people with the condition. The diet that works best for you will depend on your symptoms and how you react to different foods.

It may be helpful to keep a food diary and record whether certain foods make your symptoms better or worse. You can then avoid foods that trigger your symptoms.
